The software is free to download. From here, every other line item has a cost, so it's worth walking through them before you commit to building a store.

License

Magento Open Source costs nothing. No license fee, no revenue share, no per-seat pricing.

Adobe Commerce is quote-based, and Adobe doesn't publish a pricing page. Your fee is calculated based on gross merchandise value and average order value, so it increases as you grow. Agencies and partners report entry pricing around $22,000 a year for the self-hosted license and roughly $40,000 for the Cloud version, climbing past $120,000 for high-volume stores. Treat those as market estimates rather than an actual price — the only real number is the one you negotiate.

Hosting

Magento's hosting requirements are the reason shared hosting is off the table. You need PHP 8.5, MySQL 8.4, and OpenSearch 3 for catalog search, plus Varnish for full‑page cache. Most 2.4.9 deployments move off Elasticsearch to OpenSearch. 

Realistically: a small store on a managed VPS runs $50–150 a month. A mid-sized store with decent traffic lands between $300 and $1,500. Enterprise setups go well past that. Add a CDN for image and asset delivery, which is $20 a month at the low end and often free at small volumes.

Domain and certificates

How to Build a Store with Magento: A Step-by-Step Magento Guide

Keep in mind: you won't be doing all of this yourself. Steps three and four are developer territory — Magento is not exactly a DIY-friendly platform. But knowing what happens at each stage lets you brief an agency properly, spot when a timeline is unrealistic, and understand what you're being invoiced for.

A typical build takes 3-4 months from kickoff to launch.

1. Decide what you actually need before anyone touches code

Write down your catalog size, how many markets you're selling into, which systems have to talk to Magento (ERP, accounting, warehouse, marketing), and what your peak traffic looks like.

Sort out the technical basics

Turn on clean URLs if you haven't already, and drop the .html suffix Magento adds to product URLs by default. It's rarely necessary, and it makes URLs look dated.
